This is my first time entering quilts into Amy Ellis’ Bloggers Quilt Festival. I am really excited to be a part of this, especially because it forces me to blog more (which has been my weak spot, I won’t deny). I have chosen to enter two quilts that I finished this year. Both were designed, pieced and quilted by me. I hope you like them!
My first entry is for the Scrappy Quilt Category. My inspiration is Autumn, my absolute favorite time of year. I used scraps of fabric used in a king size quilt I made this winter (photo in my gallery page). All of the indigo fabric I hand dyed using traditional Japanese Shibori resist dye techniques. The gold fabric is a dream with the indigo and quickly has become my favorite color combo! I think this color combination screams Autumn, pumpkin patches, apple pie, cider, thank goodness Autumn is here!
Below is a little sneak peak into how I design and make a scrappy quilt. I sew random pieces together, all scraps crom my scrap bin, then like a puzzle, I try and piece them together the best I can! This quilt measures 17 x 23 1/2″. It makes for a great wallhanging in any room.
Belownis how my brain works out the puzzle portion of scrappy improv quilting.
Below is what it turned out to be after numerous versions were sewn!

Excuse me for not posting much this summer. Things have been busy as usual in my studio. I have been quilting and dyeing fabric like crazy!
So, let me catch you up on what has been happening in the studio. I’ve been designing and sewing everything from a wedding wallhanging to a gallery show wallhanging and even a charity quilt for Pulse Nightclub victims.
Below are more details of each of these items!
For starters, if you are in the Northern Michigan area, please go check out the quilt pictured below. It is on display at Three Pines Studio in Cross Village, Michigan until November 1st for the Letters: Words with Friends show. It is titled ‘Shades of White’. From this wallhanging I have been commissioned to make a throw size version of this ‘Shades of White’ quilt for a customer in South Florida. (photos of this quilt to come when finished)
The quilt pictured below was a wedding gift for my cousin and his new wife. I scrappy appliqued flowers and hearts, tea dyed the background fabric and hand embroidered their wedding day details into the quilt. (If you think this makes a great wedding gift like I do and are interested in a custom order, email me Kathrynmariedesignco@gmail.com)
The below is a charity quilt for the victims, families and first responders of the Pulse Nightclub tragedy. The Orlando Modern Quilt Guild set up this amazing cause. I am one of I believe over 400 quilts they will be giving to the victims, families and first responders. This quilt gave me goose-bumps every time I worked on it. I am so very proud to be one of the quilters who is donating a quilt for this cause.
Besides the above, I have also been busy making quilts, wallhangings and table runners to sell at Spice Harbor. Below are just a few items I made for the store. Note the Michigan wallhangings; I can custom make with any country or state you desire, just let me know you are interested!
Now that fall is approaching, I am working on a few holiday commissions, some quilts that I will enter into Quilt Con (crossing fingers they get accepted) and new fabric designs as well as a few new quilt designs to begin after the holidays!
As you might have noticed, I have also decided Etsy is not the right platform for me to sell my goods, I have closed my shop. Please note that I have added a Store page to my website. I will be playing with the layout over the next few weeks to perfect it and most likely adding some custom design options as well.
I promise to update you all much more this season!
Thanks for stopping by!
xx Kathryn Marie
