Spring Sewing

It seems like it has been a non-stop spring season.  I know this is because I have been extremely busy with sewing commissions for individual customers and for my summer stockists so I haven’t had time to slow day and watch Spring happen.  Don’t misunderstand me though, I absolutely love nothing more than to be swamped with commission work! Below are a few of my favorite individual commission projects I have been working on this Spring season.  I hope you enjoy, and don’t forget if you see something you love just contact me and I can always make more!

The quilt and wallhanging below were commissioned for an Eagle Scout and his father who was the Master of the troop.  I had never sewn so many patches before and completely became obsessed with them!  I didn’t have a lot of t-shirts to work with so it is fantastic that I had so many patches to place around the shirt logos.  I hope to get more fun commissions in the future that require the sewing of embroidered patches!

The quilt with the absolutely adorable little boy on it was made specially for my two dear friends who live in Australia and their newborn Maxwell.  I over-dyed a mint fabric for the backing in indigo.  The front of the quilt is one of my custom designed patterns which is available in my spoonflower shop,  I hand quilted and machine quilted this whole cloth quilt.  Watch my Instagram and Etsy sites this summer, I plan on making a lot more whole cloth baby quilts to sell.

Below is a reversible quilted cover to a hope chest.  This piece was amazingly fun to design.   I hand dyed all the fabric then, true to form, I laid out the pieces a million different ways until I found a design that the client loved as much as I did!

These are just a few snippets into what I have been working on this spring!  I finally bought a new laptop and will be updating my gallery page as soon as my current quilt commissions are complete!  I will also be working on blogging much more often, so make sure to check back often!

Spring Updates!

Spring has finally sprung in Northern Michigan, the woods are coming alive with trillium, ferns, mushrooms and all sorts of new growth, plus my studio is booming with natural light.  With spring always comes changes and new growth in humans as well.  My new “growth” is that I will have my products available for sale starting in June at Spice Harbor in Harbor Springs, MI !  I am so excited about this new endeavor and couldn’t be more happy to share it with you.

For those friends and customers who don’t get a chance to come visit our little paradise on Lake Michigan, don’t worry, you can still place custom commission orders with me year round and you will be able to purchase a select few items listed on my etsy site.

My goal going forward is to focus more on commission work, gallery work and work to be sold at Spice Harbor.  I really appreciate everyone’s support, without you, Kathryn Marie designs wouldn’t exist!

If you happen to be in Northern Michigan in June, the quilt pictured below will be on display and for sale at Three Pines Studio in Cross Village for their Still Life exhibit, May 28-June 15.

Welcome to my website!

Kathryn Marie designs is my contribution to making life a little more beautiful.

I guess I should introduce myself,  I am a fashion designer by trade who grew up outside of Philadelphia.  I lived in the city for about 8 years then ventured down to south Florida and now reside in northern Michigan.  I have turned  my design focus from clothing (which I still continue to make and design) into modern quilts, home goods and fabric design.  I design from my studio loft in my log cabin.

I believe that a good creative workspace is a bit of a messy space.  I could clean my space and take a photograph, but then you wouldn’t get a feel for where my creative process actually takes place.

When I am not sewing, designing and dyeing fabric I am usually in the kitchen (my second favorite part of my cabin) baking.

So that is a little bit about me for now, I hope that you continue with me on my journey!
